How to improve Chinese standard ?

My son was lucky to enter primary one of SPCCPS in the coming Sept.  But his chinese standard is low (between k2 to k3).  Even I read a sentence in chinese from the story book to him, i still don't understand.  He needs me to tell him the story rather than reading the words.  What should I do to improve his reading ability.  I am afraid that he cannot cope with the homework when he enter primary as they are all in Chinese.  

May I seek your advice.  Thank you very much.

my sons's chinese level was very low before entering SPCCPS and he had a hard time in doing homework at the beginning.

If your son loves story time, you may pick a book (better starts with an easier book, with big pictures and a few words, like only a sentence), then read the same book with him for a week, then, in the next week, take turns to read aloud the book...
Sometimes, you can make a Q&A section after reading, simply just ask him questions about the story, it might help in listening and reading for lower primary schoo kids.

I also let my son did Chinese penmanship everyday before going to SPCCPS... began with some simple words, then difficult words like his name and words found in story books.

Thank you aloyman.  I will try.  I let him write copy book to improve his handwriting.  For his chinese standard, I start to read with him story book at night time.  But after knowing that he was admitted by SPCCPS, I am a bit lazy now.  Now I read with him only once or twice a week.  I promise myself to give him better training after Lunar new year.  Ha Ha. ..
