For Chinese history, my kids are not interested at all ! It is only our parents' hope that they should know some Chinese history. But from the kids's point, there is no such need. Knowing Chinese history may be a gift or burden.Like 'love your country' in Chinese, what is the point now ?

She loves all humanities subjects including history!  In fact, once she went to the school library and borrowed books on HK history and the librarian asked if they're for project purpose.

My daughter loves history as well and an author she reads is Iris Chang. One of her books I would recommend is Rape of Nanking

You have the answer already, get her some Chinese history books written in English by non-Chinese authors. They tend to be more objective and less emotional, and the reader also gets to evaluate China from an unrelated bystander's viewpoint.

Of course, if the objective is to make your child more "patriotic" or at least develop an emotional attachment to China, then that is something else.

Exactly that's what I think!  I believe that a bystander's view is better. Do you have any recommendation?

Sometime  western view is quite strange to interpret Chinese culture that make you feel like watching 'Hollywood' movies in which   Asian all talk, dress, living, speaking expression are bit of funny that would be out of your expectation easily.

Good book is good book, no matter who writes it.

Moving the Mountain - Li Lu
Chinese Cinderella - Adeline Ma
1421 The year China discovered the World- Gavin Menzies
Wild Swan - Three Daughters of China - Jung Chang
Genghis Khan: And the making of modern world - Jack Weatherford
Rape of Naning - Iris Chang

Good luck!!!!

Following are a few books used by a certain international school in their Year 12 IB Diploma History programme ...

The People's Republic of China Since 1949 - Michael Lynch
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Peoples-Republic-China-Access-History/dp/0340929278

Mao - S.G. Breslin
http://www.amazon.com/Mao-S-G-Breslin/dp/0582437482

Communism in Crisis 1976-89 (Access to History for the IB Diploma) - Rakesh Pathak, Yvonne Berliner

HISTORY AUTHORITARIAN AND SINGLE PARTY STATES
http://www.amazon.com/HISTORY-AUTHORITARIAN-Pearson-International-Baccalaureate/dp/043503264X

These books are probably too heavy for your child in Grade 8, but just to give you a feel of what is coming if your child decides to take history.

I think that is true for popular books but for textbooks and more academic books, many good ones are written in English.  Let's not forget, Chinese books on recent history are very much subject to bias.  If one is into modern history of China, I think this is considered one of the definitive works.  Not exactly light reading though:

It is also available in Chinese as 中國近代史 by 除中約.  It is published by Chinese U in HK.
