Re: For gifted kids, which school is better?

CherylMum:
Then, if chose the international school, it will be harder to improve their Chinese, right?  That's what we worried and the reason that we insist on chosing a local school for them.  But we won't  expect their individual, critical thinking were worn down.  If it's the price to catch their Chinese, we'll make some other choices.

CheryMum, would you please share more about the school?  their teaching method, homework, any special support or assistance for gifted kids?
CherylMum 寫道:
On the contrary, when she attends after-school Mandarin classes (which are taught in a traditional approach), she feels very bored and refuses to go there after joining the classes for two months.

Re: For gifted kids, which school is better?

As a parent of GT College (優才), I would like to share my child's experience in this school.

GT is a direct subsidy school.  It places emphasis on multi-intelligence.  It offers a great variety of talent classes which are incorporated in its daily teaching schedule.  Apart from that, after school gifted programs are offered to selected students.

To me and my child, we love this school because the teachers are very understanding and caring, and ample time is allowed for my child to develop his interest after school.  Some studies reveal that home-schooling is very important and effective for gifted children.  I really appreciate that my child is not overburdened by homework so that we can enjoy our time together in evenings and weekends.

I visit the site of your school.  It's small size class, less then 24 pupils. And there are many enrichment and talent classes.
1. I still want to know about their teaching matierals.  Are they Longman in Chinese and maths?  or they compiled by their teachers?
2. How is the class going?  Is it usually like one teacher stand in front of all the students that sitting behind their desks?  Is it always open for discussing?
3.How about the homework?  As my P1 boy said, "Why should I repetition these words and answer those maths questions?  I knew them all.  They waste my time.  I like doing homework but not like these.""Why did my teacher teach and explain those simple things again and again?  It's waste my time.  I want to study but not like these."  His homework is not too much compared with some other local schools.  4~5 times per words.  He still complain cause he knew a lot of words already.  One of his hobby is studying dictionary.
4. He has a lot of studying plans.  After I told him, almost the primary school is about from 8:00 to 3:00, he said he even wanted to go back to Kindergarten, at least he would own half a day.  How about GT's class arrangment?

Re: For gifted kids, which school is better?

1. These are the books they use for Chinese and math.  In addition, GT has its own teaching materials.  The same applied to English and general studies.

2. I watched their classroom teaching demonstration.  Students are encouraged to answer questions and voice their views in class.  In enrichment class, which is similar to general science, students go to the lab and do interesting experiments.

3. As for homework, students are required to copy each word 3 times for English and 4-5 times for Chinese (as far as I can remember).  My son has this kind of assigment only once or twice a week.  Usually students can finish their homework with 1-2 hours depending on their own speed.

4. School starts at 8:20 am and ends at 3.20 pm.  Most afterschool programs end at 5 pm.

My son loves to go to school although he sometimes complains about the writing assignments which I think can help to train up his patience.  He is a bookworm and has a lot of time to read everyday.

I cannot say that GT is the best because there's no way for me to compare it with other schools but it is suitable for my child.

Thank you very much for the details.  One more question: What time is the enrichment class?  after school?  And how about the regular courses?  Are they cut down or sped up to save time for enrichment classes?

Re: For gifted kids, which school is better?

hrsccky,

Enrichment classes are incorporated in the regular schedule, two sessions a week.  I think the rest of the curriculum (textbook English, GT English, Chinese, Putonghua, math, general studies, computer, music, visual arts, PE, reading, moral education and talent classes) are quite well distributed.
