My kid also started from Sept.  He could now play 3 to 4 different notes.  No song yet.  He is studying in a group of 6 and progress is somewhat average.

Daily practice is certainly very helpful.   Teacher suggests 15mins each day.  Of course, if the kid is really very interested, it could be longer.

my daughter is learning flute at school for 2 years.  The hourly fee is about $100 per hour with 8 students in a group.  For the first few months, they can only blow a few sound with no continuity.  They have to spend time in controlling the flute.  I can reassure you that you will hear a song at the Chinese New Year.   For my daughter, she only practices one or two times in a week.  Each time is only about 5 to 10 minutes as they will be tired after continuous blowing.  After the flute examination, I employ private tutor to teach my daughter at home with the fee $120 per half an hour.
