Well, sharing information and thoughts is the main objective of this web-site.  The hypothetical nature of this topic generates blood boiling and exciting exchanges and I helped to contribute one.  I am extremely grateful that my son is studying in one of the schools, SPC, being good enough to be chosen in this “ranking” exercise.  

However, the hypothesis of this topic is rare, I don’t know much about the current policy, in my son’s year, once I accepted SPCPS’ offer, he did not allow to take place in the lottery.  When a child is so lucky to be accepted by all three schools, please don’t hold up all three places, even it is allowed, do allow other child in the waiting list to have a choice.

After reading through all the information, may be islandmama can use the decision making table below, by putting 1-4 in the table, to make decision:

I believe the “total” will be different for individual family as conditions are never the same.  

I will also like to share some thought whether SPC is still a good school or still deserved to be rank as good.  My son watched the two Wah Yan boys’ live debate on TV last night and I believe that if one of them did come from SPC, he must definitely feel very proud.  This might be the most important benefit of those “traditional” schools but every school in HK will produce role model for their students.  And SPC does provide many fine examples as same as other schools in this ranking list in the last 25 years.  I happen to know some of them and they are already fine role models for my son.  And we as parent will have more responsibility in bringing up the children than the school.

Finally, when I watched the debate last night, I believed SPC was one of the top school 25 years ago.  Each Wah Yan turned out one debater last night and SPC gave us 程翔.

That's why people do have their new evaluation of the graduates from the universities in HK.

Back in 2002, the interview was quite simple.  Ms Chan, SPCPS Principal asked questions which might be able to see whether there was analytical abilility in the kid.

The first question for my son was: Have you been to Ocean Park?
As it was a yes, then the following question was:  What is the difference between Ocean Park and other park?

It was a short interview and parents were not involved.

我唔多識英文....咁我今日問囝囝:如果你想話一個人响過去十年都唔係一個好人點講呀?佢問番我係男人定女人,我話男人啦.佢答我:He was not a good man in the last 10 years, 或者 He has never been a good man in the past 10 years都得........佢今年小三,我都係要佢多多向人學習至得.

I think only King's is the only good secondary school in western district, St. Louis is even worse than St. Paul Boys.
I have no relationship nor friends connected with SPC, the 'conclusion' I made is based on their acceptance to the University ( A-Level results ), and well as my observation ( the University I spent 3 years is so close to the school ).

For me, I like St Paul Boys simply because my husband graduated from it 20 years ago ...........    ..........I'm also kidding .

HKU is not the only university in the world.  Simply taking admission rate to HKU and one's observation from the nearby district to "conclude" whether a secondary school is good or not is "too simple and naive".  I spent five years in HKU for my first and master degrees, but I could not judge which secondary school in the proximity of HKU is better than the other.

Declare interest :  I have no connection to all three boy schools listed.

in my days in HKU in mid 80s, one lecturer said no matter where we were from, we were the second grade students because the very best already left HK in form 3 or 4.

With due respect to that lecturer, I am unable to share his/her view.  I would, however, rephrase his/her speech as follows:

"..... those rich and wealthy students already left HK in form 3 or 4".

讀得傳統名校個批家底都有返咁上下，中學派位入及有一小部份個批除外, 佢地至勁個批就讀到F.6, 考埋個HKCEE, 2x 分, then TOEFL+SAT就直入NYU,USC等美國top U !無咁勁個批，就一早走埋，有d讀完初中就去UK/US讀高等學府boarding school, 二十幾三十萬一年，讀得又輕鬆，學校成日都有out trip, 唔係去sight visit, 就去外國exchange
對CE有d信心但又唔係至top個批就讀埋先過去UK讀 A-level, 跟住話咁易就入當地top U 啦

香港大學d學生睇唔過眼, 就成日話係佢地讀唔店先出國
但又真係有好多CE考幾分就去US community college 讀associate,再transfer入當地top U like UCLA,  我眼見不少,好多精明既僱主都唔鐘意請呢批

This has become a new battlefield for HKU and overseas universities!!
Let's concentrate on the discussion over the quality of primary schools in HK Island again!!

why not ask private tuitor in tutorial centers, they know a lot about every school.
